During TGS some of my peers wondered if the company was treading a bit too far from its strengths, but after checking out a more mature version of the game at GDC 2004 it looks like Jade Empire will be BioWare magic all over again. At the same time, the game is set to include everything fans expect from a BioWare game: deep story, intriguing characters, complex character development, superior voice acting, dazzling music, etc. Unlike past BioWare titles, Jade Empire places a premium on action and graphics - two areas the company isn't known for. Furious Ming is the perfect character to utilize when you want to use lots of the game's focus power, which slows the action down to a crawl and allows you to batter your opponent before he can even raise a hand in defense. When I first saw Jade Empire at Tokyo Game Show 2003, I was impressed that BioWare was attempting different things with its next role-playing game. As his name suggests, Ming's got furious fists and feet, and while he won't be seeing lugging a longsword around anytime soon, he's a master with light weapons, able to disembowl an enemy with his lightning fast moves. For that type of player, the best choice is Furious Ming, the lithe, acrobatic, and heavily tattooed character. However, many players would rather go into battle with a fighter who is taken directly from the Bruce Lee school of martial arts, utilizing faster (and less powerful) attacks. If you've never seen any of the Jade Empire gameplay videos, I can assure you that this can get quite messy, as Tiger Shen's punches are strong enough to explode an opponent like a blood-filled balloon. Tiger Shen is a master of utilizing heavy weaponry, as well as using his powerful attacks to knocks enemies off balance before finishing them with a punch through the chest. If that's you, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better brawler than Tiger Shen, the man with the bulging muscles, bald head, and long ponytail.
